چکیده

The authors examined the associations of hostility measured in adulthood with subsequent BMI assessed at four time points over a 19-year period in a United-Kingdom cohort study. A total of 6,484 participants (4,494 men and 1,990 women) aged 35 55 years at – baseline (1985 1988) completed the Cook-Medley-hostility-scale for hostility. BMI (kg/m ) was assessed at medical examination at – 2 phases 1 (1985 1988), 3 (1991 1993), 5 (1997 1999) and 7(2002 2004). Mixed models analyses of repeated-measures showed clear – – – – evidence of increasing BMI over the follow-up in both sexes. In women, higher levels of hostility were associated with higher BMI at baseline and this effect remained constant over the follow-up period. In men, hostility levels were also strongly associated with BMI at baseline but results of the interaction term between time and hostility also suggest that this association increased over time, with the highest quartile of hostility gaining an excess of 0.016 kg/m ( 0.023) annually over the follow-up period compared to the lowest 2 p= quartile. The authors conclude that the difference in BMI as function of the hostility levels in men is not stable over time. MESH

Effect of secular trends on age-related trajectories of cardiovascular risk factors: the Whitehall II longitudinal study 1985–2009

BACKGROUND Secular trends in cardiovascular risk factors have been described, but few studies have examined simultaneously the effects of both ageing and secular trends within the same cohort. METHODS Development of cardiovascular risk factors over the past three decades was analysed using serial measurements from 10 308 participants aged from 35 to 80 years over 25 years of follow-up from fi...

A statistical model to describe longitudinal and correlated metabolic risk factors: the Whitehall II prospective study.

BACKGROUND Novel epidemiology models are required to link correlated variables over time, especially haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and body mass index (BMI) for diabetes prevention policy analysis. This article develops an epidemiology model to correlate metabolic risk factor trajectories. METHOD BMI, fasting plasma glucose, 2-h glucose, HbA1c, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and high de...

Short Sleep Duration Is Associated with Shorter Telomere Length in Healthy Men: Findings from the Whitehall II Cohort Study

BACKGROUND Shorter telomere length and poor sleep are more prevalent at older ages, but their relationship is uncertain. This study explored associations between sleep duration and telomere length in a sample of healthy middle and early old age people. METHODS Participants were 434 men and women aged 63.3 years on average drawn from the Whitehall II cohort study. Sleep duration was measured b...
